Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) was a colonial city. The British East India Company developed Calcutta as a village by establishing an artificial riverine port in the 18th century CE. Kolkata was the capital of the British India until 1911, when the capital was relocated to Delhi.
Kolkata’s architecture includes many imperial landmarks, including the Victoria Memorial, Howrah Bridge and the Grand Hotel. The city’s heritage includes India’s only Chinatown and remnants of Jewish, Armenian, Greek and Anglo-Indian communities.
Kolkata is known as the City of Palaces because of the number of buildings built by the British Raj during the 19th century. These buildings have been maintained till date, and act as architectural proofs of our country’s rich history and struggle for freedom.
